SUMMER FUN: MUSIC FOR HOTELS VOL. 2

28-page 21x21cm Book + CD, ltd. 500 copies

The compilation "Return to Acapulco - Music for Hotels Vol. 1", curated by Vittore Baroni and released in the summer of 2024, collected 16 songs created by as many musicians as a soundtrack for the different areas of a typical seaside hotel structure. The second volume of this unique collection that seeks new solutions to combine tourism and culture starts from a different concept, with 20 covers of well-known and lesser-known songs dedicated to summer by 20 Italian musicians and bands (plus a couple of international guests). Summer is a season of positive vibrations, spontaneous adventures and melodies that accompany us under the sun and on starry nights. "Summer Fun" is therefore an updated version of the classic summer collection conceived for dancing and relaxation, with 70 minutes of music equally divided between unbridled surf-garage fun, captivating lounge-pop, rhythmic dance to cheer up beach parties and romantic songs in memory of loves born and ended on the sea shore.

In the title track, Le Forbici di Manitù revisit with gentleness the single Summer Fun by Londoners The Barracudas, a euphoric hymn to the end of the school year and the beginning of a holiday period best spent on the beach. We certainly couldn't do without the classic summer hit, Estate all'italiana, borrowed by Andrea Tich from Jambo Bwana, an international “hotel pop” hit from the 80s that came out of Kenya (the song is promoted on YouTube by the original video by Fabrizio Gatta). Then there are those, like Little Taver & His Crazy Alligators, who have faithfully revitalized old hits - the swinging Tipi da spiaggia recorded in 1959 by Johnny Dorelli - and those, like the duo Alice Tambourine Lover, who have translated the retro-soul sound of The Style Council's Long Hot Summer into their own indie blues-folk lexicon, and also those, like Paolo Tarsi together with Andrew Evans, who have paid homage in delicate miniature to David Sylvian's farewell to summer September, and others who have chosen a parodic and grotesque approach, like Jealousy Party and Energumeni who have revised and corrected iconic hymns to summer such as In the Summertime and Vamos a la Playa.

A small piece of Italian rock history is represented in the rich setlist, from the sixties beat of Moreno Spirogi's Gli Avvoltoi, with a passionate live in studio cover of Baustelle's Charlie fa surf, to a stylish ballad brought to success by Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra in the intense version by Fabrizio Tavernelli, from the oblique evocation of Gershwin's Summertime by NicoNote (aka Nicoletta Magalotti, former vocalist of Violet Eves) with Halfcastle to the Doors' Indian Summer ingeniously hybridized with Ravel's Bolero by Polychron+ with guest Alex Spalck, historic vocalist of Pankow, from the evergreen Summertime Blues by Eddie Cochran revisited in Italian by Lodovico Ellena & Ganesh Blues Band (formerly in Effervescent Elephants) to the impressionistic Summerhead by Cocteau Twins reinterpreted by Ataraxia, heralds of an ethereal sound that combines modernity and ancient music. Francesco "Franz" Bucci of Amaro 19 rediscovers a beautiful page by Sergio Endrigo in the light of a Disques du Crépuscule aesthetic, while sparkling bands with a vintage sound like Lisa Beat and The Liars and The Cleopatras respectively transport the renowned California Sun to Italy and re-propose a seaside hit by Tommaso "Piotta" Zanello. A folk ballad by Aimee Mann is brilliantly revised in This Mortal Coil/4AD style by Vittorio Nistri with an exceptional guest vocalist, Esterina totally appropriate a classic like Azzurro without betraying its bittersweet spirit, Death Wishlist with instrumental and vocal prowess infuse lightning-fast punk-metal energy in TNT's Indian Summer, while Maisie reinterpret with intense emotion Una mezza estate, a forgotten gem from Fred Bongusto's repertoire.

In addition to the lively and fun retro-Pop cover designed by Massimo Giacon, a large cast of artists, illustrators and cartoonists were involved in the creation of original illustrations for each track of the album: AlePOP (the late Alessandro Staffa, to whom the collection is dedicated), Beppe Casini, Marco Corona, Alberto Corradi, Maurizio Ercole, Luciano Federighi, Laura Fiaschi of Gumdesign, Marco Fine, Nik Guerra, Hurricane, Pietro Leddi, Simone Lucciola, Reg Mastice, Nikt N., Mat Pogo, Michael Rotondi, Pasquale "Squaz" Todisco, Dandy Angelica Vannini, David "Diavù" Vecchiato, Stefano Zattera. Project conceived and produced by Vittore Baroni. Graphics and layout by Cristiano Deison.
